Boost home Wi-Fi by moving your router

Before you buy anything, try moving your router. Walls, furniture and distance all weaken the signal. Google's advice for its own routers works as a general checklist.

  1. Go central. If your cables allow, put the router near the middle of your home, not in a far corner.
  2. Lift it up. Put it off the floor at about eye level, like on a shelf or TV stand.
  3. Keep it in plain view. Don't hide it in a cabinet or closet. Google says things like walls, doors and aquariums (fish tanks) can block the signal.
  4. Test where you use Wi-Fi. Check the signal in the rooms that matter, then adjust.
  5. Still weak in one area? A mesh system adds extra points. Google suggests placing each point about halfway toward the weak spot, not in it.

Your router has to stay connected to your modem, so cable length may limit where it can go.
