Zebra printer red light? What the lights mean

Last reviewed: October 2026, against Zebra's desktop printer user guides · For Zebra five-light desktop printers (ZD410, ZD411, ZD420, ZD421, ZD620, ZD621).

Your Zebra desktop printer has stopped and a light is red or blinking. On five-light models like the ZD421 and ZD621, the lights on the front tell you what's wrong. Here's what the common patterns mean and how to clear them.

These lights work the same way on Zebra's Link-OS desktop printers with five indicator lights (ZD410, ZD411, ZD420, ZD421, ZD620, ZD621). GK420 models have a single status light and aren't covered here.

⚡ The short version

  1. SUPPLIES red: out of labels. Load a new roll and press FEED.
  2. SUPPLIES blinking red: out of ribbon. Load a new ribbon and press FEED.
  3. STATUS red with labels loaded: push the cover closed until it clicks.
  4. STATUS and PAUSE blinking red: the printhead is too hot. Let it cool, then restart.

What the lights mean

  • STATUS solid green: ready to print.
  • STATUS red: media out, media detection error, cover or printhead open, cutter error, or printhead authentication failure.
  • SUPPLIES red: media out. SUPPLIES blinking red: ribbon out (thermal transfer mode only).
  • PAUSE amber: the printer is paused. Press PAUSE to carry on.
  • STATUS and PAUSE blinking red: printhead over temperature. Let it cool, then restart it.
  • DATA blinking amber: out of memory while storing formats, graphics or fonts.
  1. Out of labels (media out)

Open the printer, take out the old roll and core, and load a new roll. If it's the same kind of labels, press FEED once to carry on. If the new labels are a different size, type or batch, run a SmartCal calibration (see Calibrate your label printer). The lights for media out: STATUS red (Zebra's media-out page says flashing red) with SUPPLIES solid red.

  2. A label is missing in the middle of the roll

A gap in the roll can also trigger media out. Pull the labels past the missing one until the next label is over the platen roller, close the printer and press FEED once.

  3. Out of ribbon

Open the printer, remove the used ribbon (keep the empty core for loading the new ribbon) and load a new ribbon roll or cartridge. Press FEED once to carry on.

  4. Cover or printhead open

Push down on the front top corners of the cover. You should hear and feel the latches snap in place. If the light stays red with the cover shut, Zebra says the head-open switch may need a service technician.
