Sato CL4NX error 1008 or 1009? Clear it

Last reviewed: October 2026, against Sato's online manuals · For Sato CL4NX Plus, and CL4NX/CL6NX where noted.

Your Sato CL4NX Plus has stopped with error 1008 (Out of Paper) or error 1009 (Ribbon End) on the screen. Usually it's out of labels or ribbon, or something isn't loaded quite right. Sato's manual lists the causes for each code, and you can usually clear them yourself.

These steps are from Sato's online manual for the CL4NX Plus. Sato's manual for the earlier CL4NX/CL6NX gives the same steps for these two errors.

⚡ The short version

  1. 1008: load or re-load the labels, then open and close the print head, or press OFFLINE.
  2. 1009: load or re-load the ribbon, close the print head, or press OFFLINE.
  3. Still there? Clean the media sensor and calibrate (1008), or turn the printer off and on again (1009).

Error 1008: Out of Paper

  1. Load or re-load the labels

Sato lists these causes: no labels loaded, labels loaded wrongly, or a label jam. Load the labels following the path in the manual and remove any jammed labels.

  2. Clear the error

Open and close the print head, or press the OFFLINE soft button (bottom left of the screen) or the Line button (▶‖).

  3. Still showing 1008? Clean the sensor and calibrate

⚠ Before cleaning: turn the printer off and unplug it, and let the printhead cool, because it gets hot during printing. Use only a printhead cleaning pen, or a lint-free swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol if your printer's manual allows it. Never use anything sharp or metal on the printhead. Touch the printer's metal frame first to discharge static.

Sato says a dirty media sensor, a label stuck to it, or a wrong sensor level can also cause it. Clean the sensor with Sato's cleaning kit, then run Auto-calibration. See Calibrate your label printer.

Error 1009: Ribbon End

  1. Load or re-load the ribbon

Sato lists these causes: no ribbon loaded, the ribbon (or the labels) loaded wrongly, or the ribbon has run out. Load a new ribbon, or re-load the ribbon and the labels.

  2. Clear the error

Close the print head, or press the OFFLINE soft button (bottom left of the screen) or the Line button (▶‖).

  3. Still showing 1009? Turn it off and on again

If the ribbon sensor isn't working correctly (for example, it's dirty), Sato says to power the printer on again.

  4. Printing without a ribbon?

Using direct thermal labels with no ribbon and still seeing 1009? A common cause to check is the Printing Mode setting in the Printing menu. Sato's factory setting is Use Ribbon. Sato's 1009 page doesn't list this as a cause. To change it: go Offline, then Settings → Printing → Printing Mode, and choose Direct Thermal.

Error 1007 (Head Open)? Push the head lock lever towards the back to unlock the print head, then press the print head down until the lever locks again. Error 1028 (Gap Not Found)? See Calibrate your label printer.

If an error won't clear, Sato says to contact Sato technical support.
